Rupert Garcia
Rupert Garcia, La Xochitl IV, 2003
Jacquard tapestry, fabric paint
82 x 82 in.

Rupert Garcia is an artist committed to creating artwork not only as a means to achieve aesthetic ends, but also as a viable method to address social and political concerns. In his work, art historical images mingle with images drawn from contemporary culture as well as abstract elements to create compelling pieces which reflect Garcia’s ongoing engagement with moral, spiritual, and aesthetic dilemmas. His tapestry’s title, La Xochitl, meaning 'flower,' comes from the Aztec calendar and is a day for creating beauty and truth. The 13-day period associated with Xochitl is thought to be profoundly influenced by creativity and playfulness. After La Xochitl was transformed into a tapestry, Garcia further embellished it by painting on the surface, resulting in a truly unique work.
