Peter Voulkos
Though principally known as a sculptor, Peter Voulkos has been involved in the creation of two-dimensional images throughout his career. An accomplished printmaker and draftsman, Voulkos brings to his works on paper the visceral energy characteristic of his ceramic pieces. Like his sculptures, Voulkos monotypes and lithographs walk a fine line between order and chaos. In his prints, forms emerge from textured backgrounds, only to disappear under series of washes or avalanches of bold brushstrokes. Voulkos frankly displays his working process in these images, his spontaneous use of stroke and line, what he chose to erase, what he added. As such, Voulkos prints serve as records of his decisions and testify to his roots in Abstract Expressionism. Since his emergence as an important avant-garde figure in Californias art scene during the 1950s, Voulkos has taught and exhibited widely around the United States and abroad. His work is held in the collections of museums throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, CA; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Netherlands; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, Japan; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, Great Britain. Peter Voulkos lives and works in Oakland, Califronia.
