William Wiley
Creative War Map, 2005
Jacquard tapestry
72 x 81 in.
edition of 6

In Creative War Map, William Wiley responds to US military activity abroad with humor, beauty, and hope. Small sketches referencing the current political climate are scattered about the map; some are ironic interpretations of real situations, while others offer creative alternatives to the present. Wordplay and humorous visual cues often play into Wiley’s images, allowing him to approach even the heaviest, most somber subject matter from a light-hearted and quick-witted perspective. The scroll in the upper corner of this tapestry bears the title of the piece and is signed by the justus society; a dotted line marks the boundaries of various diatribes.
