Guy Diehl
Camellia & Jar, 1990
etching with watercolor
8.75 x 9.25 in. (paper: 17 x 15 in.)
edition 40

Camellia and Jar was printed at Magnolia Editions in Oakland, CA. The line work of the image was drawn by Guy Diehl through a hard ground onto a copper plate, which was etched in ferric chloride. In addition to spit bite done primarily in the jar area, the artist also painted stop-out-varnish on the multiple etches of aquatints to create the subtle grey tones. It took five states to achieve the right to print used as the standard for the editioning. The plate was steel faced by Robert Townsend prior to the editioning. A set of unsigned progressive proofs of the early states still exists. The prints were hand-wiped and printed on a Griffen etching press. The artist hand colored approximately half of the edition with watercolor, then approved, signed and designated each impression.

Water-colored version in pink (as shown), red, orange, gradated red.

Black & white version is $700.
