Louis LaBrie
Old Friends, 2001
etching aquatint, watercolor
11 x 21.75 in (paper: 18.5 x 28 in.)
edition of 70

Old Friends was pulled at Magnolia Editions in Oakland, CA on an American French Tool etching press. A copper plate was incised by Louis LaBrie, who drew into a hard ground and stopped out the image for aquatint. After etching, the image was then transferred to a second copper plate on which the artist drew what would become the second etched color, red. The prints were pulled individually, each plate inked and precisely registered, by printers Rick Dula and Sarah Rainey. After a proofing session where various color changes were tried, the artist selected a “right to print” which was used as the standard for the edition. After completion of the etching process, the artist watercolored each print by hand.
