Katherine Westerhout
Sears I, 2003
Jacquard tapestry
84 x 110 in.
edition of 5

The dramatic, fluid light and shadow of Katherine Westerhout’s urban landscapes find a natural complement in the continuous weave of warp and weft threads. The artist writes that the scale of her tapestries provide access to the world of public art, “allowing the viewer to enter the image, rather than view it through a window.” Sears I invites the viewer into a vast, abandoned building in the San Francisco Bay Area, layered with dreamlike reflections and mesmerizing tricks of the light.
